JPG, PNG or WebP: Which Image Format Should You Choose?

JPG, PNG, WebP… each image format has its strengths. The right choice depends on what you’ll do with it: a photo, a logo, an image with transparency, or a light image for the web. Here’s a clear guide.

JPG — for photos

JPG is a compressed (lossy) format, perfect for photos: small files, compatible everywhere. However, it doesn’t support transparency and isn’t ideal for text or flat colours.

PNG — for logos and transparency

PNG is lossless and supports transparency. It’s the ideal format for logos, icons, screenshots and images with a transparent background. The trade-off: larger files than JPG for a photo.

WebP — the modern web format

WebP produces smaller files than JPG and PNG at comparable quality, while supporting transparency. It’s an excellent choice to speed up a website.

In short

Photo: JPG. Logo / transparency: PNG. Lightweight web: WebP. And you can convert your images from one format to another anytime you need.
